A support group like your family or physician usually determines
where your Long Term Care will be received. There are many
different possibilities. Some needs are better met at home,
while others may be best taken care of in an assisted nursing
facility or nursing home. The following section will look
at each of these possibilities.
Skilled care
in the home is available, but can be a very expensive option.
For this reason, most home care is non-skilled, custodial
care. Family or other attendants may visit or live in the
house and can assist with daily needs like bathing and making
meals.
Adult Day Care offers community-based care for those with
multiple and special needs associated with a number of different
disabilities. It was designed with the goal to keep people
out of nursing homes and in their own homes. This service
is best for people who only require non-skilled
care and have moderate impairments, such as Alzheimer’s
disease, slight brain injury, and vision or hearing impairments.

Assisted-care Living Facilities provide an excellent alternative
to nursing homes. Guests are furnished with live-in individual
apartments that can be made to feel like home and are given
a sense of independence and freedom. Activities and social
events are constantly going on and community dining rooms
provide food. Assisted-care Living Facilities are great for
people who want or need assistance with day-to-day activities,
but do not need expensive medical care facilities.

Nursing
homes may provide skilled
care, non-skilled
care, or both. Medicare pays for skilled care services
if it meets the required criteria, but Medicare does not
cover non-skilled care. While the goal of skilled care in
nursing homes is rehabilitation, the goal of non-skilled
care is to maintain the patient’s needs. The majority of
American nursing care is non-skilled.2
Because nursing homes have a trained and well-experienced
staff in both their non-skilled and skilled departments,
nursing home care is a considered possibility for those
who need Long Term Care.
